Set up your own Neighbourhood Watch Scheme or find your local one

Contact the police who will know if your area has a scheme, if not they will assist you in setting one up if others in your neighbourhood are also interested. The Hampshire Constabulary website at http://www.hampshire.police.uk/Internet/advice/advice/neighbourhoodwatch.htm

Decide what issues you want your Neighbourhood Watch to tackle, as each area has different issues to address, such as car crime or burglary. You may want to address environmental issues that relate to crime.

The co-ordinator of your Neighbourhood Watch is a key part of an effective scheme. His or her role would include maintaining the Neighbourhood Watch in a specific area and act as a link between the scheme, other co-ordinators, the local police and the Local Authority.

Once you have a co-ordinator in place and have set up the Neighbourhood Watch scheme in conjunction with the police, you can then undertake some of the activities to ensure the scheme runs smoothly and efficiently. These could include circulating newsletters and property marking advice, encouraging members to report suspicious activity accurately, and holding regular meetings.
